Tom Leach, the executive director of the Pennsylvania Society for Biomedical Research, will present on the impact and potential impact of public policy initiatives being driven by the animal rights community on biomedical research. The presentation will discuss the movement of the animal activist community from protests and illegal activities to direct lobbying efforts that influence public policy. Legislative efforts that target research directly, as well as legislation that impacts research operations by failing to distinguish between companion animals and laboratory animals will be discussed. The impact of court decisions and regulations on animal-related businesses will also be reviewed. The presentation will also provide tips and strategies to empower members of the laboratory animal research community to become vocal advocates for common sense public policy decisions regarding issues that impact medical innovation, careers, as well as animal welfare.
