Risky Business: An Introduction to Assessing and Managing Risk

This workshop provides an overview of the risk assessment process, which is a standardized procedure for collecting and analyzing information relevant to potential hazards in order to prioritize measures that can be taken to reduce their impact.  Knowing how to accurately identify hazards and implement successful strategies to minimize their effects to an acceptable level is essential for maintaining the safety of research personnel, animal facility staff, and the animals involved. The content includes a practical discussion of risk assessment principles with real-life examples to illustrate how they can be applied to protect personnel and maintain the health and welfare of animals in a typical laboratory animal facility. Inherent differences between individual animal programs, facilities, staff, and other unique factors that can influence the outcome will be highlighted.
