This session will feature guest speakers Dr. Carol Clarke from USDA-APHIS Animal Care and Dr. Neera Gopee from OLAW.

USDA Updates
Dr. Clarke will provide updates from USDA on COVID-19 processes, proposed rules and policies up for comment, compliance support processes, outreach and training, and other recent changes.

OLAW Updates
In this session, the many recent OLAW initiatives and resources that are available to assist IACUCs with their animal care and use programs will be presented. The discussion will include OLAW updates on the numerous resources that may be useful during a pandemic, the memorandum of understanding between NIH and NASA, the 21st Century Cures Act efforts and so much more!

About Our Speakers

Dr. Carol Clarke is a Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine. She received her bachelor’s degree in the Natural Sciences from Johns Hopkins University, and her D.V.M. degree from the Tuskegee School of Veterinary Medicine. She currently serves as the Research Program Manager for U.S. Department of Agriculture-Animal Care. Her duties include outreach to stakeholders, developing policies, collaborating with other Federal agencies, reviewing petitions and comments on regulatory changes, participating in investigative actions, and reviewing requests to perform more than one major operative procedure. She also served as the project officer for Module #26 -Nonhuman Primate Transportation, of the National Veterinary Accreditation Program; and created the transportation check list for research animals for the Institute for Laboratory Animal Research (ILAR).

Neera V. Gopee, D.V.M., Ph.D. is the Director, Division of Policy and Education in the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda Maryland. Dr. Gopee earned her veterinary degree at the University of the West Indies and holds a doctoral degree in Toxicology from the University of Georgia. Prior to her appointment at OLAW, she served as a Veterinary Medical Officer at the National Center for Toxicological Research, US Food and Drug Administration in Jefferson, AR. Dr. Gopee is board certified in toxicology and laboratory animal medicine
