The popularity of germ-free animal models, particularly mice, for investigation of human physiology and disease has recently exploded. The exponential increase in the use and the number of sites producing and working with germ-free/gnotobiotic animals arose the need to be able to produce more animals but also the need for easier access to the animals not only by the animal technicians but by the researchers. This has moved facilities to adapt to using both the tried and true method of housing germ- free/gnotobiotic animals in isolators and IVCs (individually ventilated cages).

We will discuss how these two technologies have merged together.
