Overview: The laboratory animal science industry is a highly regulated industry for good reason; we must do everything in our power to protect the animals under our care. We follow the 3Rs as closely as possible, we continue to refine practices to ensure we provide the best animal welfare possible, and are constantly looking at new ways to provide animal enrichment and support. Animals always come first, no one will ever argue that; but where are your caretakers in all of this? Do you have any regulations, policies, or procedures in place to ensure you also care for them? Far too often the front-line animal care workers are some of the lowest-paid employees in the organization but also act as the first responders for animal care services. When animal-related policies change, they’re the first ones retrained to put them into practice. They frequently must put in overtime and work through holidays, and when the going gets tough, they’re the ones who have to handle all the emergencies. With all this in mind, how do you keep these folks motivated? How do you ensure they thrive in often less than optimal working conditions? How do you make sure change is handled optimally? How do you have multiple generations work together in an efficient and cohesive manner? This presentation will focus on developing internal policies and procedures specifically for your staff. We will discuss some quick wins that can help set your animal care program on the path to true employee engagement that will have a huge positive impact on your overall animal care program and help provide the best possible care for your animals.
