Allentown Webinar - The ABCs of LAA: Recognizing and Preventing Laboratory Animal Allergy Exposure

  • 27 Jan 2021
  • 1:00 PM
  • Online
Overview: The impact of laboratory animal allergy (LAA) exposure as an occupational hazard has been recognized since the early 1970s and is well documented in LAS trade publications, scientific journal articles, and governmental agency reports. Studies have reported that 20 - 30 percent of lab animal workers experience some form of LAA-related allergic response, from mild reactions like rhinitis, skin and eye irritation, to more severe reactions like ocular, nasal, skin, and laryngeal edema. This month, Allentown partners with board certified laboratory animal veterinarian Dr. Tim Mandrell to present a webinar focused on this important topic, and including sources of laboratory animal allergy; conditions and procedures that increase the risk of personnel for exposure; and methods for avoiding or minimizing exposure through administrative procedures, engineering controls, and the use or personal protective equipment.

Presenter: Dr. Tim Mandrell is a board certified laboratory animal veterinarian who has spent his career in academia, government and industry. He currently provides services that include vivarium planning and research animal program consulting for institutions in the US and abroad. His professional interests include vivarium planning, animal biosafety and occupational health and safety. Dr. Mandrell is a Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine, author or co-author of over 60 published articles, abstracts and book chapters, Secretary-Treasurer for ACLAM, and Secretary-Treasurer for AALAS. Dr. Mandrell is also an Ad Hoc Specialist for AAALAC. He is a graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Comparative Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.Tuesday, January 26 at 5:00 p.m. ET
